Artist Studio in Backyard Shed
Challenge
This creative couple had recently purchased a charming but compact home in Portland’s Overlook neighborhood. While the house had great character, it lacked a dedicated space for art and creative work. The property included an old, deteriorating garage—more of a liability than an asset—that wasn’t suitable for their needs.
Solution
With the garage beyond saving, it made sense to replace it with a purpose-built structure. After a site visit and our initial design meeting, the solution became clear: build a simple, beautiful, and light-filled backyard shed art studio in the same location. By opening the studio’s south side to the garden, we captured serene, natural light and stunning views. Access through the narrow space between the house and studio maintained the alley path and made better use of that circulation.
Results
This modest yet impactful structure reflects the values and vision of its owners. It complements the original home with matching architectural details and high-quality construction. We preserved a striking maple tree, whose dappled shade enhances the studio’s peaceful atmosphere. Natural materials and expansive windows connect the interior to the landscape, creating a calming and inspiring environment. This efficient design exemplifies our thoughtful process and commitment to creating meaningful spaces—no matter the size.
